À propos de l' exposition

Entitled “Outside the Box” is the first exhibition of bulgarian art brut artistis.

After the exhibition in Paris, France /16/09 - 30/10/2022/, over 70 works, including paintings, sculptures and wood carvings were displayed to the Bulgarian public as well at the Doza Gallery in January and February  2023.

Among the selected artists are Rouscho Tihov (1947-2017), Ivo Dimchev, Rossen Karamfilov, Borislava Marcheva and Denis Popov. Also on show will be works by psychiatric patients.

“Until now Bulgaria was the only European country which hadn’t been represented in this field which is unusual for the Bulgarian public. There is no information about contemporary Bulgarian artists brut and because of that they remain completely unknown to the international public,” the “Bulgarian Art Brut” project said.

The term art brut means unrefined, raw art and was coined by artist Jean Dubuffet in 1945 to describe art created outside mainstream culture. The English equivalent is “outsider art”. Today both are used to describe self taught artists with no formal training who are unknown to the mass gallery scene, and come from marginalized social groups.

The exhibition “Outside the Box” was the first initiative under the “Bulgarian Art Brut” project, which aims to collect, summarize and popularize information about Bulgarian artists from marginalized social groups focusing on art by people suffering with psychiatric disorders and self-taught artists.
